Udine is the heart and symbol of the region. Its medieval and Venetian past revives in the squares, buildings, and monuments. The city centre is the piazza Libertà (freedom square), which is justly called the “most beautiful Venetian square on the main land” thanks to the impressive castle’s hill towering above the city, the characteristic loge of Lionello, and the wonderful campanile. In the city’s palaces and churches are numerous artworks of the artist Giovanbattista Tiepolo (18th century), so that Udine is also called “Tiepolo’s city”.
